Pleurothallis rowellii

Pleurothallis rowellii is highlight of our collection during every autumn and winter. This large flowered pleurothallis species is found in wet forests from Costa Rica to Ecuador where it is recorded over a wide range of elevation from warm forest at 350m to much cooler forest at 1750m. Individual flowers last several weeks and the plant produces a succession of flowers over several months from old and new growths.

We find the species is very happy in our Cloud Forest Glasshouse (min 12C) with other members of the genus and although the reported range suggests it would grow much warmer.

The species enjoys a low light levels and resents bright light on warm summer days. We provide these conditions by growing plants on lower shelves in the greenhouse where it is shaded by other plants. We also find it likes to be watered heavily especially in warm weather.
