Masdevallia asterotricha

We have had Masdevallia asterotricha in our collection for many years and always enjoy both the large yellow and red flowers and the free flowering nature of the species.

Masdevallia atertricha is endemic to Peru and reported to grow in wet forest from 900 to 1500m altitude which accounts for the species being tolerant of higher temperatures than some masdevallias as long as it is well watered.

The species is compact with attractive leaves on short stems and the flowers are held well clear of the leaves. The yellow flowers are speckled with red and are very long lasting. Flowers are produced on and off throughout the year.

We find plants do well mounted and in pots in a semi-shaded spot in our Cloud Forest greenhouse.
