Masdevallia zahlbruckneri ia a widespread species is found from Costa Rica and Panama in Central America through to Colombia and Ecuador in South America. It is reported from 400m-2000m altitude which suggets that the species is tolerant of a wide range of environmental conditions.
In cultivation we find the species easy to grow either in pots or mounted but with the horizontal and pendulous nature of the flower spikes a plant that looks best mounted.
Our plant shown here has over 20 flowers which almost hide the 8cm leaves and gives a wonderful display.
We spray plants once a day and grow them low down in our Cloud Forest Greenhouse where they have some shade and a minimum temperature of 12C although the habitat range suggests that it would be happier grown warmer.
