This is a small growing bulbophyllum with large and dramatic flowers. The flowers are produced singly on thin stems from the base of more recent bulbs. Once a plant has become a bit of a specimen it gives a lovely display.
We grow the species mounted or in pots and find that it enjoys warm temperatures and lots of water during the summer growing season.Â
Bulbophyllum lasiochilum is found across South East Asia from India, through Myanmar and Thailand to Malaysia. It grows in warm forests with a distinct dry season and in cultivation we water a bit less in the winter (dry season) and have no problem with them flowering reliably.
As well as the long lasting and fascinating flowers the species is attractive when not in flower thanks to the thick, dark, glossy, single leaves on stout little bulbs.
