Another of our wonderful Australian denrobiums is Dendrobium adae.
Dendrobium adae is smaller growing than closely related species with slender pseudobulbs around 25cm tall and relatively large waxy flowers in sprays of 2 to 6 from the tops of old and new bulbs. The flowers are sweetly fragrant.
Dendrobium adae is only found on the Cape York Penninsular in North Eastern Austrailia where it grows in wet cool forest and cloud forests from 700 to 1220m altitude. This habitat means that the species is cool growing and less tolerant of drought than many of the Australian dendrobiums.
We grow our plant in our himalayas greenhouise min 7C, which really suits its natural habitat. We grow plants in open bark and water well in the summer and dryer in winter but always a little damp. Plants respond well to good light providing they are kept damp.
We are delighted to have healthy seed pods developing on one of our plants and hope to have this rarely seen species available as seedlings in about two years time.
