Encyclia pollardiana

Encyclia pollardiana is endemic to South West Mexico where it grows in seasonally dry open forest from 1000-1400m where it experiences a short summer wet season and a long cool dry season.

In cultivation we find the species is ideally suited to living close to a bright south facing window kept just moist when not in active growth and then fed and watered well when acively growing.

The species produces long branched flower spikes in mid summer just before its active growing season in the late summer and autumn.

The long lasting flowers of Encyclia pollardiana are a stunning combination of pink and brown and like most Encyclia's butterfly pollinated.

We have seen similar Encyclia species thriving in harsh dry forest in Belize and Guatemala where few epiphytes can cope with the long dry season and keep this in mind when keeping plants very much on the dry side when resting.
