Masdevallia barlaeana is a wonderful vigerous and brightly coloured orchis native to cool grassy slopes in the mountains of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. The crimson flowers attract humming birds and are held well clear of the deep green leaves. Plants and flowers are more compact than many members of Masdevallia coccinea group but their bright colour means that they are never overlooked.
In the wild plant are found at altitudes from 2200-3100m and so plants will be exposed to low temperatures throughout the year. We grow plants in our Cloud Forest Greenhouse (min 12C) and water throughout the year. Plants thrive grown in pots and mounted on cork.Â
The flowers are long lasting and we often have flowers from late spring right through to the autumn.
