Masdevallia sanctae-rosae is named after the town of Santa Rosa in Colombia near where it was first recorded in cool cloud forest from 2200 to 2800m. The species is endemic to Colombia.
In cultivation we find the species straight forward to grow in pots, baskets or mounted providing it is grown cool and shaded (we keep it near the floor in the greenhouse and on a shaded windowsill indoors.
The little nodding flowers deserve close inspection and our clone has three red stripes on the lip little red spots on the outside of the sepals. We have seen photos of clones with more red striping on the petals.
