Dendrobium loddigesii is a charming species that grows lush little growths each summer and then large single flowers in April following a cool dryer winter. Dendrobium loddigesii is native to South East Asia where it is found in open mossy woodland from 1000 to 1500m where it experiences a warm wet summer and a cooler dryer winter.
In cultivation we grow plants indoors in our Ikea cabinets and in the top of our Cloud Forest greenhouse (min 12C) We find that young plants enjoy watering all year allowing plants to develop quickly but for flowering a cooler rest (with watering once a week) really helps maximimise the number of flowers.
Wew have seen this described as a miniature species and although it flowers small and individual growths are up to 8cm long, plants grow growths ontop of growths making wonderful specimen plants covered in flowers over time.
