We have two distinct varieties of this wonderfully floriferous Masdevallia. Today we feature the standard variety of the species with masses of stunning red flowers produced on short spikes amongst the leaves.
Plants are compact with leaves around 8cm long - a really rewarding species.
Masdevallia herradurae is native to wet forests in Ecuador and Colombia where it is found from 500 to 2100m altitude This is an unusually large range indicating that the species is happy in a wide range of temperatures. We grow our plants in our Cloud Forest Greenhouse with a minimum of 12C and they really flourish, becoming large specimens in short time as long as we water plants well throughout the year.
